It’s been far too long since I’ve shared what’s really happening behind the scenes in my log cabin workshop, and today I thought I’d tell you the honest stories behind some of my most popular makeup bag designs.
You know me – I can’t just create something without it having a proper story! But these aren’t fairy tales – they’re the real, sometimes wonderfully random moments that spark new designs.
I’ve always found Highland cows absolutely adorable – those gorgeous fluffy fringes and gentle eyes just melt my heart. But the Highland cow makeup bag actually came about in the most serendipitous way.
A neighbour of my parents popped round one day and asked if I could possibly create a Highland cow design on a makeup bag. “I know it’s a bit unusual,” she said, “but I’m obsessed with them!”
Now, here’s the weird bit – literally the week before, I’d been browsing in that lovely little cafe gift shop on Ode Street (you know the one, they do the most amazing scones), and I’d spent ages admiring these beautiful Highland cow paintings.
The timing was just too perfect to ignore! Sometimes the universe just aligns, doesn’t it? That neighbour’s request was exactly the nudge I needed to turn those fluffy Scottish beauties into one of my most beloved Highland cow accessory bags.
The reaction has been incredible – turns out there are far more Highland cow enthusiasts in the world than I ever imagined! Who knew those fluffy fringes had such a devoted following?
I’ve always been fascinated by giraffes – there’s something so elegant about those impossibly long necks and gentle expressions. But my giraffe makeup bag design was born from one of those perfect family days out.
We’d taken the kids to Colchester Zoo, and they had this amazing Group Feed experience with the giraffes. Standing there, watching these magnificent creatures up close, seeing their beautiful spotted patterns and those incredibly long eyelashes (honestly, we could all learn a thing or two from giraffe lashes!), I was completely mesmerised.
The kids were chattering away about how tall they were, but I was studying the intricate patterns on their faces, the way the light caught their golden spots. By the time we got home, I had sketches floating around in my head.
That weekend, I turned those zoo memories into what would become one of my most popular animal-themed makeup bags. Every time I look at the giraffe design, I’m transported back to that wonderful family day and those gentle giants reaching down for their treats.
The mermaid makeup bag has rather sweet beginnings, actually. My nieces went through this phase where everything had to be about Disney mermaids – you know how children get completely obsessed with something and it becomes their entire world?
I originally created a one-off mermaid design just for them, something special and unique. But as I was working on it, the design just seemed to evolve under my hands. What started as a simple tribute to their Disney obsession became this beautiful underwater scene that felt magical in its own right.
It’s funny how a simple auntie project can turn into something so much bigger, isn’t it?
Sometimes the best ideas come from the most practical requests. My eyelash makeup bag came about when one of my sister’s friends mentioned she was struggling to find the perfect storage for her beauty therapy supplies.
I offered to create something bespoke for her – the delicate eyelash design seemed perfect for someone whose work was all about making eyes beautiful. When she received it, she was absolutely thrilled. The appreciation in her voice when she called to say thank you made me realise this wasn’t just a one-off need.
That’s when I decided to make the eyelash cosmetic bag available for others to enjoy. It’s since become popular with beauty therapists, lash technicians, and anyone who loves those flutter-worthy details.
My “Face Of…” makeup bag has probably the most unique origin story of all. I received this wonderfully specific request through Etsy from a customer who asked if I could create a beautiful bag stating “This bag contains the face of Ada.”
At first, I thought it was rather amusing – what a wonderfully confident way to think about your makeup routine! But as I was designing it, I realised how brilliant the concept actually was. We all carry our “face” with us in our makeup bags, don’t we? Our confidence, our style, our daily transformation ritual.
Ada’s bag turned out beautifully, and the more I thought about it, the more I loved the whole philosophy behind it. It’s become such a popular design because it celebrates that daily ritual of putting on our face – quite literally! Perfect for anyone who walks around with their makeup and wants to own that confidence.
Now, I have to confess something about the leopard print makeup bag – this design exists purely because I am absolutely obsessed with leopard print! I’m not even exaggerating when I say half my wardrobe consists of leopard print dresses, tops, and skirts. I’ve got leopard print boots, leopard print pumps – you name it, if it comes in leopard print, I probably own it.
So when I was thinking about makeup bag designs, leopard print was inevitable really. It’s my personal favourite, and I couldn’t create a collection without including my own style obsession! You’ll notice quite a few of my designs feature leopard print options – there’s even leopard print heart bags – because honestly, why wouldn’t you want to carry a bit of wild style with you?
It’s one of those designs that just makes me smile every time I make one, because it’s so unapologetically me.
The lion makeup bag came about in that wonderful way that ideas sometimes do – just swirling around from everyday occurrences. After that brilliant family day at Colchester Zoo (yes, the same trip that inspired the giraffes!), my mind was buzzing with all the beautiful animals we’d seen.
The majestic lions, with their incredible faces and flowing manes, just stuck in my thoughts. There’s something so powerful yet elegant about a lion’s expression – fierce but beautiful. It seemed like exactly the kind of design that would make a gorgeous makeup bag.
Sometimes the best designs come from these moments when your mind is just processing beautiful things you’ve experienced. The zoo day was such perfect inspiration – surrounded by all these magnificent creatures, it was impossible not to come away with a head full of design ideas.
The turtle makeup bag has rather sweet inspiration too. We’ve got pet tortoises at home (they’re absolutely lovely, though not the speediest of companions!), and having already created that beautiful mermaid design, turtles seemed like a natural progression into the underwater theme.
But here’s what makes the sea-themed bags really special – it’s all about the glittery vinyl I use. The glitter is as much part of the design process as anything else, creating that magical effect of light shining through water. People can choose their colours, but the original designs are nearly always themed around that glitter catching the light like sun through ocean waves.
The turtle design works beautifully as part of some of the beach bags too – one theme just naturally blends into another when you’re working with ocean inspiration. It’s all connected, really – mermaids, turtles, the sparkle of water in sunlight.
The hot lips makeup bag and high heels and lipstick designs are just pure womanly celebration, really. Nothing says “makeup bag” quite like those designs for a girl getting ready for a night out, or preparing for something special.
These aren’t based on any particular moment or request – they’re just those universal symbols of feminine confidence. Red lips, high heels – they’re the visual shorthand for glamour and sophistication that every woman understands.
